Very Brief Psychotherapy

Very Brief Psychotherapy
Routledge | ISBN:0415950589 | Edition - 2005-07-22 | PDF | 232 pages | 7 MB

As the fields of psychiatry and clinical psychology are increasingly driven by the economics of the HMO or Mental Health Center, practitioners in any setting, whether it be private practice or university clinic, are now forced to develop more concrete procedures and models in order to practice more efficiently. This book presents a set of procedures for brief therapy that are based entirely on the four common dynamics of psychiatry. By following the model set forth in this book, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and mental health workers will be able to build an entire brief therapy program based upon the initial conditions for each patient.

The Self in Neuroscience and Psychiatry

An international team focuses on current models of self-consciousness from neurosciences and psychiatry in this collection of essays. These are set against introductory essays describing philosophical, historical and psychological approaches. Neuroscience has recently contributed important insights to the concept and construction of the self from conditions, such as schizophrenia, in which the self becomes disordered and can be studied against healthy controls through experiment, building cognitive models of how the mind works, and imaging brain states.

The Neuropsychiatry of Epilepsy

Michael Trimble and Bettina Schmitz have assembled an international team of experts to review the most recent findings and explore the interface between epilepsy and behavior disorders. The authors discuss the classifications available and examine how adequate they are for defining the subtleties of behavioral changes in patients with neurological disorders. Coverage is broad-ranging, from related cognitive problems, biological underpinnings, and pseudoseizures, to clinical aspects and treatment issues. This timely book covers the practical implications of ongoing research, and offers both a diagnostic and management perspective.

Medical Illness and Schizophrenia

Jonathan M. ed. Meyer, "Medical Illness and Schizophrenia"
American Psychiatric Publishing; 1 edition (2003) | ISBN:1585621064 | 256 pages | PDF |

The life expectancy of patients with schizophrenia is approximately 20% shorter than that of the general population. Lifestyle choices, effects of medications, poor self-care, barriers to treatment—all contribute to medical problems that increase the severity of psychopathology, reduce quality of life, and lead to premature death in patients with schizophrenia.

Medical Illness and Schizophrenia examines the links between medical conditions and severe chronic mental illness, with a focus on

The need for better medical assessment and treatment to improve outcomes in patients with schizophrenia

Links between schizophrenia and conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV and hepatitis C, endocrine-related disorders, and others

The association between therapy with certain antipsychotics and adverse health outcomes including hyperlipidemia, obesity, and diabetes mellitus

The importance of improving community health services to treat the dual problems of medical and mental illnesses in the schizophrenic population

Developed to fill a critical gap in the literature, Medical Illness and Schizophrenia is an important volume for any clinician who encounters patients with chronic severe mental illness. In addition, it serves to underscore the need to provide integrated medical and psychiatric care to this vulnerable population.

Doing Psychiatry Wrong: A Critical and Prescriptive Look at a Faltering Profession

Doing Psychiatry Wrong: A Critical and Prescriptive Look at a Faltering Profession
Stationary Office | Pages:152 | 2007-07-10 | ISBN / ASIN:0881634697 | 2 MB

The prospect that the psychiatric profession has hurt rather than helped many of its patients is incredibly disheartening; however, wrong diagnoses and improper treatment are all too common errors within the field. Author RenĂ© Muller presents a revealing look into how psychiatry has failed a great majority of patients, all the while recognizing the valiant efforts made by psychiatrists who maintain their integrity and serve their patients well. The result is an enlightening critique of the profession—one that pits criticism of psychiatry’s current biological reduction and exaggerated promises against the accumulated wisdom of a profession that has struggled for a century and a half to understand and help those with mental illness.

Muller’s analysis is drawn from the experience of having evaluated scores of emergency room patients over the course of 10 years. The patients’ stories reveal that many of these individuals have been diminished or damaged as a result of a wrong diagnosis and improper medication. Individual chapters throughout Doing Psychiatry Wrong explains how and why the practice of psychiatry has changed, how psychiatry mistreats depression, misdiagnoses of schizophrenia, and, finally, how psychiatry can be practiced so that all patients are helped by the medical profession rather than harmed.

Comprehensive Textbook of AIDS Psychiatry

Comprehensive Textbook of AIDS Psychiatry
Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN:0195304357 | Edition - 2007-08-22 | PDF | 656 pages | 3.4 MB |

Among the vast and rapidly growing field of AIDS research, there is an ample body of evidence supporting the fact that psychiatric treatment can decrease transmission, diminish suffering, improve adherence, and decrease morbidity and mortality. There is probably no other illness in which the connections between mind and body are so inextricably woven. But until now there has been no comprehensive textbook of AIDS psychiatry to guide clinicians towards providing much needed care. Using a biopsychosocial approach, this 41-chapter volume offers insight into the interface between the psychiatric, medical, and social dimensions of HIV and AIDS. Drawing on clinical experience as well as evidence-based medicine, this textbook provides a basic understanding of the comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions that cause distress, morbidity, and mortality in persons with HIV and AIDS, while at the same time examining the epidemic from the viewpoints of public health and public policy experts.
